BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has been for many years an important partner for the Jewish community on many domestic issues, but the record on Israel has not always been so clear.

The Presbyterian General Assembly rejected an Israel Divestment initiative and that's the good news. The bad news is a longer list. First of all, the initiative was defeated by 333 to 331 with two abstentions. To better understand this result in perspective, you need to understand the way the process and the vote work at the Presbyterian GA. Each local Presbyter elects, in addition to the regular delegates, what they call Youth delegates. These Youth delegates participate fully of the process – that is on all preparatory committees. When the vote comes to the floor, however, they don't have a voice nor a vote.

The Middle East committee which presented the initiative to the Assembly for vote approved the resolution by a very wide margin, a margin that was 2 to 1 among adult members and overwhelming among Youth members. Obviously something has gone wrong when we are faced with this situation with one of our most traditional partners on domestic issues.
