BLOGGING JEWISH IN DUTCHESS  

 

Jews were for many centuries colonized because of their unique situation of being a people in exile, subordinated to whatever was the majority population in the places where they lived; subject to expulsion at the whim of the ruler; not allowed to be a full part of the society in which they resided and confined to special neighborhoods where they were subjected to humiliations and restrictions.

They were not allowed to be part of certain professions and in many cases obligated to pay special taxes to be tolerated as a foreign element in society. This was truth in the Christian world of Europe as well as the Muslim world of Northern Africa and the Middle East.
